My Dog's Sixth Sense Warned Me

My Furry Angel
Although I wasn't there at the time Joey was adopted, he and I became best of friends and were connected at the hip. I had moved into my twin sister's home when I was diagnosed with lung cancer. Too sick to work, he and I spent every waking moment together. He made the difficult days of chemo and radiation tolerable with his kisses and loyal companionship. He often laid in bed with me especially when the chemo had proved to be too much and I didn't want to be alone. My furry friend even accompanied me to radiation once a week. All the patients fell in love with him and looked forward to his smiling face in the car. A kiss from Joey gave them a needed boost before and after their treatment.
Chemotherapy was getting really rough for me as the drugs they put in your veins have a cumulative effect. Simply put, this means that with every treatment, you become sicker and sicker. Unfortunately, I was one of those people that became incredibly nauseous from it. I couldn't hold down most foods for the life of me, except for crackers and icecream. I was on a medication for the naseau which didn't help and gave me constipation.
My older brother Dan was over, helping Laura pull out patio furniture for the summer season. I was very weak from the several weeks of chemo. I noticed Joey was following very close behind me all day. He seemed upset and I tried to figure out what was wrong. He even tried to get in the shower with me that morning and he's usually scared to death of water. Till this day, we have to bring him to petco to get bathed. I figured he sensed I was weak and wanted to be there for me if I fell. (Can you tell I think my dog is a genius?)
I was sitting on the throne and realized I was very constipated. I was in excruciating pain and felt light-headed. I got up slowly and walked out to the deck to get Laura. I said, "Laura, something is wrong, will you follow me back to the bathroom?" She noticed immediately that I was white as a ghost. The last thing I remember was Laura and Joey looking at me on the toilet. My next memory was hearing Laura screaming, "oh my God, Linda, please wake up." My darling sister was attempting to throw me over her shoulder. As I came to, I said, "don't even think about it sis, put me down and just walk me to my room." I asked Laura what had happened and she explained that I passed out when I sat on the toilet. She nervously told me that I quit breathing and she caught me as I passed out and slumped over. She was screaming for me to wake up. I was now laying in Laura's arms on my bed until the paramedics came. Three EMT's walked in my room and started assessing the situation. As I started explaining what had happened, my beautiful dog jumped on the bed and layed his head in the nape of my neck. The two women and one man were very choked up seeing Joey's display of loyalty and love. Joey knew all along that something wasn't right with me. He whined as I was lifted into the ambulance.
The medical term for what happened to me is called, "neurogenic shock or circulatory collapse." It is brought on when the body is in severe physical or emotional pain. I had never known what it was like to be constipated until this event. Let me tell you, constipation is not for sissies.
To this day, Joey and I have a deep connection that can never be broken. He and I are best friends and I can't imagine life without him.

Both dogs and cats seem to respond to our problems with their own anxiety.
We have a 'sick' cat who climbs into the bed and cuddles up to anyone who is not feeling well! :-)
BTW, pain killing narcotics will also constipate.
Your Joey is a fantastic friend. And so loyal. I am blessed enough to have experienced such love several times. I am so happy for you that you have him. I hope your outcome is a positive one with your cancer. God Bless.
Up to ten years ago, when an incredible English professor took me aside and recommended that I write, I was a technocrat. My world, aside from my wife and son, was devoid of people, let alone friends.
And now, I couldn't imagine life without my new friends.
So you've shaken me a bit with your describing your battle with cancer. I know you and I have been friends for only a short while but I expect to be friends with you for a very long time.
We have two dogs and one cat, with one, our Papillon, the only young and active one who also completely dominates our household with his little French attitude and insatiable curiosity.
No matter what any of us does, he's there, and most often, he's peeking around a corner, with his huge furry ears sticking out comically, to do so.
We simply could not imagine life without our little Beau Beau...much like you, my dear friend Ms. Minne'... =)
Rest assured you and I have many years to come to learn from each other and grow to be ever stronger friends...
What a blessing that you have Joey to stay by your side and give you all that love. I am happy you have him. I do think he needs a really big bone today though! My dogs take care of me whenever I am not feeling so hot either. They are amazing and we are truly lucky to have their love!
What a blessing to have such a faithful, fury, friend to have been with you through your sickness. A beautiful story indeed! I am so happy you have been cancer free for all these years. Your stories will hellp many throught their trying times. Thanks so much for sharing. Lovely!
Sunnie
Yeah, Linda, animals can sense pending storms too. My cat can usually tell when I'm not feeling well. He'll get into bed with me and walk to my head and put his face next to mine. He knows when it's raining too. He likes to look out the window and watch the rain. He won't hide from a storm unless it gets too noisy.
I am very happy to hear you are cancer free.
Joey is a loyal treasure, and reminds me of my Sunny, our half Chow and half Basenji. She always senses when something is wrong. She knows exactly when to cuddle, or to place her muzzle in my lap with her eyes looking up into mine with such a gentle, caring look. These wonderful pets give so much to us, and they love unconditionally.
Thank you for this well-written and inspiring hub.
MT,
i have heard od dogs being trained to find cancer and other diseases in humans- dogs are quite amazing and they lick your face after they lick their ahem nether reions-Ya take the good ya take the bad....We wanna get a dog but i am afraid of the revolt our cats will throw....

WOW! What more can I say about what you said here? WOW!

Animals have such amazing instincts. They can sense illness, upcoming natural disasters and even bad intentions. Joey sounds like a great friend.
What an awful thing to have to go through. I pray that God will totally heal you and renew you with an abundance of strength.
I love animals and your "furry angel" Joey sounds so special. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story.
I do so love dogs!! They are the best friends one can have and when you are sick they don't mind laying with you, even if it's all day. My girl (who has long since passed) laid next to me for an entire day when my head felt like it was about to explode not letting anyone or anything bother me. I wanted to call an ambulance but couldn't get out of bed to do so. When her mate came near my bed to ask to be let outside, she almost came unglued on him. For her to be so violent toward him I thought their must really be something wrong with me. After 8 hours or so the headache finally subsided...
I'm so glad you have a pal to help you!! They are priceless!
MT,
Beautiful story, and I'm so sorry for all the pain you've gone through. In 2008, I had multiple severe neurological and renal problems, surgeries, anesthesia reactions, you name it. I really know what it's like, and it's scary. Then when all of that was done, I needed nine months of excruciating physical therapy for a tendon problem. I must have been sick for a total of 20 months.
I hope you are getting better.
Stu
Dogs are always our friends. Hop you are getting better.
What a beautiful story and one I can completely relate to. People wonder and laugh at us (when they are being kind) why we have so many animal friends. I have found them to be much more loyal, forgiving and better conversationalists then most humans ...lol They truly do have a sense of things we are ignorant of and will gladly even give their own lives to save ours if need be. I'm very glad to know you have this wonderful, wise friend!
Hi MT - What a great story.
Gus :-)))
Minnetonka, I do so hope that you are in total remission now. Dogs know, they can even (I've read) detect Cancer in humans...What a wonderful Pet and friend you have in Joey. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful and heart felt time in your life. May there be Happy memories and times ahead.
great hub! but i do believe that everybody have sixth sense, it only works when you are aware of it.
Inspirational story. Its amazing how pets can sense when something is wrong like that. How precious. Glad you all made it through this experience.
Animals are so sensitive to our moods and they know when somethings wrong with us. They are such a blessing. What a horrible experience to go through, Minnetonka. I'm so glad that Joey and your sister were around. Give Joey a big kiss for me!
I love that photo of him on the sofa. God sure gave us an amazing gift when HE created animals. Thanks for this heartwarming story of how your friend helped you. He may have saved your life.
Hi Minnetonka Twin, our furry friends can be such a comfort to us in our time of need, i am so glad that you had Joey there to comfort you !
Awesome hub !!!
The loyalty of a dog is unmatched by humans! What a dear story you have shared with us! I hope you're feeling much better these days!
Minnetonka- thank you for sharing. Our animals always seem to know what's best for us and continually watch over us without fail or a price tag attached. A good butt scratch and my elliot is good to go. :)
happy to know your companion has your interests at heart.
thanks again.
peace- greg
My dear friend, Minnetonka Twin,
There is no better cure for the spirit than unconditional love. This alone can heal. My heart is lifted with happiness that you are now seven years free! :) And you and Joey have spent seven years together, and many more in the future.
Thank you for sharing your life with us all. You and HT are inspirations. {hugs}
Linda, they sometimes know what is wrong with us before we know it ourselves. Some years ago, I was very depressed and just wanted to lie around and feel sorry for myself. I was lying on the sofa in the living room, with my eyes shut, just crying... Then something told me to open my eyes. My dog, Malcolm, was sitting in a begging position, just watching me with such compassion on his face,
Let me say now that never have I taught my dogs to beg. I don't like dogs doing tricks. But he had decided that doing that would cheer me up. He made up the begging act... because I needed it at the time. And for some reason, it cheered me up, and when he "got down" I said, "Do it again, Malcolm" and he did it!
From then on, all we had to say was, "Do it!" and he "Did it!"
Not a very exciting story, but it proves to me that no matter what, a dog will always be there for us.
Such a powerful story. I have heard of research studies that have been done on this subject. Dogs can smell tumors or cancer for instance. Animals help with healing. I've heard numerous stories in the medical community about this.
Good for you Minnetonka - you're someone to learn from.
Awesome hub, thanks for sharing My Dog's Sixth Sense Warned Me.
best wishes, Mike
Such a touching story! Thanks for sharing that, there is so much that we do not understand about animals and their perceptions and abilities.
Minnetonka Twin,
Thanks. It was a struggle, but the doctors and surgeons did a great job, and I was very lucky they were able to fix so many things without causing side effects or other harm. The hardest part was mental; sometimes I would go months before a diagnosis could even be made (since certain symptoms can relate to dozens of potential underlying causes). I practically lived in the hospital for almost a year (going back and forth for tests, X-rays, etc.). It was very depressing, but I'm glad it's over.
Best, Stu
Great article, what w wonderful dog story as well.
Minnetonka Twin,
Thanks, and I hope you remain well too.
As far as being "taught," I think I'd rather remain uneducated. :)
Stu
Beautiful & Awesome story! You and Joey are an inspiration to everyone who reads. Thank you so much for sharing, and please stay well. Prayers are with you!
Debbie
Linda, I have a picture of Malcolm doing a "Do it" and somehow I will send it to you so you can see him. I don't know how, right now, but I will think of a way.
What a beautiful story. Not the constipation! But the love your dog has for you! I suffer from constipation and it is so bad at times I lay in bed crying as the hard rocks crushes my intestines. I know what you were going thru! I couldnt not live without a companion from the animal world. I have a cat Twiggy who I adore to pieces! And my mom has a german shepherd I grew up with that I love so deeply. He was always there for me when I was a teenager crying, home alone. He would rest his head on my shoulders and simply not budge until I stopped crying. I am going to miss him dearly when its his time. He just turned 10.
Great hub.Another affirmation of how animals especially dogs are man's best friends. These creatures are really loyal and will not let you down. Hope that you are better now. My prayers are with you. God bless you.
It is amazing how much our pets know and can sense. That's why we love them so much.
l´m so glad to hear you are 7 years cancer free.
What a wonderful story about your loyal dog.
Thanks for sharing and may you continue to be well.
We should all be grateful that our dogs are on this planet with us, and I am so grateful to hear that you have been cancer free for seven years, stay that way for the rest of your life please. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story about your dog. God Bless You.
i honestly have to say this is the best hub i've read since i've been on this site (which has only been a couple weeks). i've had dogs my whole life and can relate to the best friend feeling. also, my little cousin is in remission (for the 2nd time) from leukemia but wasn't allowed to have his dog with him in the hospital. i'm sure it would have made his recovery a lot easier. i was teary reading most of your hub and i'm so glad that joey was there for you & hopefully you are doing so much better. hugs & much love ;)
A very touching Hub. Man's best friend comes to the rescue once again.
Wonderful article! Voted up and awesome!
I enjoyed the story. Cats and dogs are very sensitive and know things humans don't think we know. Say hi to Joey for me.
Magick.
My cat Lilly is almost at 17 now, I have never heard of a cat that old and I just keep being amazed. She has always been a little mean to swat you if you rub her the wrong way but now almost every evening she comes and jumps on my bed for petting and a nap. It is hard knowing she can't last too much longer but then I thought that when she was ten, lol. Animals are loves, glad you had that comfort.
An awesome honest Hub-so refreshing. I have had alot of medical issues and I feel for you in this situation.Animals can act as angels at times.
Awesome hub, MT, so touching, I know you better now and glad you have a loyal dog.
AB
amazing Linda just amazing but yes animals are known to sene the aura around a person and what is happening to it.
i am very very glad you wer ok friend.God bless your friend
Hi, what a wonderful dog, I am sure he gave you a great deal of comfort, I remember reading somewhere that dogs are great for epilepsy too, they seem to know when someone is going to be ill and pass out, I hope you are well now? cheers nell
What a heart wrenching hub. I'd heard that dogs can detect illness and cancer in humans and this is testament to that. Glad you are ok. Thank goodness for our wonderful four legged companions.
Your little dog looks a lot like my little old guy, Skip. He too, was incredibly smart and intuitive. Voted up and helpful. :)
Oh, Skip went over the Rainbow Bridge a long time ago. He was 22!
Hi twin Thank you for the fan mail. Your profile intrigued me. As I read this touching story, it reminded me of our dogs over the years, all Golden Retrievers. Your dog helped you in your time of need, and that is so amazing. I hope you feel better now and that your cancer is in remission. I love hearing twin stories, and your twin story touched my heart. We are soulmates with our college majors in the same field. I can't wait to read more hubs. Take care.
Read this hub from start to end I just can't get over the beautiful words you have in this sentence: "Joey knew all along that something wasn't right with me. He whined as I was lifted into the ambulance." Wow, you're so blessed to have Joey. I don't know the pain you're going through, perhaps I would in the future. Just the same, I am happy to know that you can find strength and support from your furry angel.
Hi MT, I am so pleased to hear you are now cancer-free.
Fortunately I bought my tissues with me, thank goodness you have Joey, what a wonderful, loyal companion he is.
Voting up, best wishes MM
Just love reading this article. You are very fortunate! Great style with your writing. A moving piece to read and enjoy. We just adopted a puppy. She is a treasure and brings us joy! voted up and shared. This is a classic! take care.
She is part pit and part jack russell. A small dog for now, I hear she will be growing in size! I am going to post her later. Her name is Prancer.
MT, Furry angels are amazing in their sensitivity and in their protective abilities. In the photo, Joey appears to have laid down in peace to sleep, confident that all is safe (Psalm 4).
When my mum had double cataract surgery, we stayed with one of my friends during her recuperation. She had strict orders, which began with not moving about unaided. After setting her up in her room, my friend and I noticed that his sheltie, Nick, trotted over to her and stationed himself alongside her bed in such a way that she could not possibly move from the bed without Nick's knowledge. With each stage of her recovery, Nick positioned himself at appropriate positions within her room, so that at the end of a month, with my mum's wonderful recovery, Nick stationed himself across the threshold in the doorway of her room. Nick's sixth sense was amazing and instilled confidence in me and my friend that my mum had caring eyes on her even while we slept.
I am saddened to learn of your bout with cancer, but I am pleased to read that the bout is behind you and your health is blooming!
Thank you for sharing this lovely tribute, not only to Joey, but to those near and dear to you who clearly love and appreciate you!
MT, When my mum was in and out of hospital during the last year of her life, she and I loved the furry angels who were allowed to accompany their family for appointments or visits. Dogs are so loving that they bring joy not just to their immediate family but to everyone around them. Canines who are credentialed as hospital visitors really touch me with their devotion to their job description, which they so generously exceed each and every time; they clearly know why they are there --- lighting up the lives of people whom they don't know --- and they also are clearly committed to their responsibilities.
Joey is such a treasure; I'm pleased that he brought such joy, not only to you, but to all who were blessed to cross his path.
Hi Linda,
So sorry that you had to endure those horrible treatments but so nice to hear that you are now cancer free. May it long continue! You are right...your dear Joey does look a lot like our Trudy did. Aren't animals wonderful! It seems that they can sense our feelings and how we are doing so much better than people can in most instances. They are truly one of God's blessings to us! Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this hub. SHARING it with my followers. May God's blessings be with you always.
What a horrible time you went through but what a wonderful dog you have! A blessing from God for sure. My dog, Blondie, used to lick my mom's ankles when she saw her. She knew that mom's circulation was bad and they hurt. Blondie never did that with anyone else.
I'm so glad that you have Joey as a companion, Linda. The things that dogs can sense are truly amazing, and they are such wonderful and loving friends. I hope that you continue to stay well and enjoy life.
Dogs are such a great gift from our Creator. Nothing on earth surpasses their loyalty and unconditional affection.
This is a wonderful and inspirational story and you are very generous to share it with us! Your friend Joey reminds me that an animal's instinct is to protect and care for their loved ones in their time of need. We can learn a lot from our four legged friends! :)

I sure hope you are better now. How scary is that and what a dog. Pets are wonderful and they do have a sixth sense. I couldn't live without my cat either. Very touching hub.
