Is that Guy Flirting with Me?
85It started as a typical week day for me. My alarm clock woke me from my slumber with some smooth jazz. I got dressed, brushed my teeth and hair but decided there was no need for make-up or any other beauty enhancements. I grabbed a blueberry cereal bar, slugged down an icy cold glass of milk and was out the door. I dropped Laura off at work at about 8:30AM and as I pulled out of the parking lot, I noticed the gas gauge. The car was literally running on fumes. Thankfully there is a Holiday Gas Station one block from Laura's work place.
This is where an innocent trip to the gas station, gets interesting...
I got out of my car and started pumping gas. Have you ever had that feeling like someone is watching you? I started looking around the crowded gas station parking lot. HMMM, maybe I'm just a little off today. Just as I put the gas hose back in it's holder, there it was. Someone was staring at me. It was a very handsome gentleman around my age. He smiled and waved at me. He was sitting high up in a very nice "all- boy" kind of truck. I thought to myself, "Is he looking at me or is it the person at the gas pump behind me." I came up with many scenarios of what else he could be looking at besides me. Then I started worrying that if he was looking at me, it was because I did something wrong, like cut him off in this small parking lot, or perhaps, took the gas pump he was going for. I started making my way to the front door of the Holiday Station. Before paying the attendant, I took a little detour to the ladies room. I guess I had too much milk for breakfast. Walking out of the bathroom and down the canned goods isle, I nearly bumped right into him. It was the man that may or may not have been staring at me. He looked at me and gave me a really warm smile and kind hello. I reciprocated but continued walking towards the front of the store to pay the cashier. Now my mind was racing and asking many questions, like, "wasn't he on his way out of the parking lot?" "Is this a coincidence that he came back in the store and down the same aisle?" "Maybe he forgot to buy something the first time." I was now at the front paying for my gas and he appeared once again. He waved and flashed those pearly whites at me and was out the door. "Don't look out the door Linda, you'll look like a freak" I thought to myself, but I couldn't help it. I tried to be discreet as I peeked around the door. To my embarrassment, he had turned around as he walked to his truck to see if I would look. He waved and smiled. I said my goodbyes to the cashier and knew I had to go out to my car sometime. I rushed to my car, put the key in the ignition and looked around. He was now parked even closer to my car and gave me another smile and wave. He gave me a finger point to show me which way he was heading. I waited for him to pull out and then made my escape in the opposite direction. I was talking and laughing out loud on my way home, realizing I had been flirted with, at a gas station. I actually think he believed I may follow him to his destination. Maybe he was thinking of meeting up at a safe place like Caribou Coffe, unless he was an axe murderer and hoping I'd follow him to his isolated cabin. I prefer to think this handsome gentleman only had the best of intentions. A woman can dream can't she? No matter what this guy was all about, I have a great story to share and I must say, it felt really good having a man go to so much trouble to make sure I noticed he was flirting with me.

Do you think the flirty man at the gas station was harmless

Funny story. I think he was just a nice gentleman who liked you very much. I guess, your reciprocal reaction was not as strong as his feelings and that's why you did not come to talk to him... But really does gas station romance have any chance?
He was too egotistical. If he wanted to get to know you, he should have introduced himself and given you a chance to respond.
Expecting you to follow him like a puppy tells you what that relationship would have been like.
Yes a Woman can Dream, and this was a fun read...However you are also a Smart Woman, and a little Flirtation goes along way and probably made you feel good all day...No harm in that...and thank goodness your story did have Happy Ending.
When you say, "I tried to be discreet as I peeked around the door," maybe it gave you away that you were standing on the cashier's desk and banging on the window with a can of baked beans that made him turn and wave. There are degrees of discretion, Linda!
Flirting is always fun but I agree with Will it just doesn't sound right. Peace!! Tom
i have to agree with WillStarr if he really wanted to get to know you, he should have spoken up! Otherwise he was saying "Woman, you want to know me, you gotta put forth the effort.." And I also agree that it could have been potentially dangerous.
BUT, DANG it was fun wasn't it? Even if for just a moment.. The heart begins to race, the blood flows into your cheeks, you probably even checked your reflection somewhere along the way... Yeah... that is FUN!!
You know you got that 'Vote up' from me!!
I think it is sad we have chosen to shut warm flirts out of our life. The small percentage of so called evil doers have taken precedence in our life and fear has caused us to be cold animals rather than helpful caring social creatures.
The flirting person should only be considered dangerous if he followed you and stocked you.... until then he is innocent until proven guilty not guilty until proven innocent.
It is extremely sad we have shut out warmth and love from our fellow travelers in this walk of life. No -- it is SICK that we have become a society of fearful human beings.
Crap - a flirt is a moment of warmth... a moment of love... a moment of a gift from our creator reminding us that we are worthy.
Oh, that was exiting... but of course not worthwhile to react on. Just enjoy. Surf the waves of your heart... before they break on the shore...
The ball was in his hand and he had no idea how to hit it in the court of a lovely lady like you. Perhaps at the next gas station he will find a poor puppy-kind of a woman who will follow him to end of his finger.
May you soon have another exiting experience, but with Mr. Right.

What a riot. I love all the protectors out there for you. You have made many friends here on hub pages. I agree you should feel it and know you did the right thing.
Great story and I too have to agree with Will. Who knows you may just bump into him again and this time hopefully he will introduce himself rather than point for you to follow :)
What a Fun and funny Hub. I think every male that is overtly interested is an ax murderer, and have had my daughter say, "Mom, didn't you GET IT? He was flirting with you!" Er, no I didn't get it. Thank you for the smiles and laugh. :0)
I met my husband at a car wash of all places; not very romantic. He definitely flirted, but he was a gentleman and introduced himself, and things progressed safely from there. Sometimes we have to rely on our instincts, and this station flirtation may have been fun -- and that's always cool - but I wouldn't have taken it any further.
Good hub!
MT - The last time I made the mistake of flirting with a gal I didn't know I wound up getting married to her. Now 58 years later I am still trying to figure out what happened.
Gus :-)))
hey like the words "warm flirt" in the comments.
flirting is harmless, flirting is fun and flirting is acknowdeldgement of that we appreciate the good in the person.
love to flirttt but if i meet you in a parking lot Linda i will pretend i have not even noticed how pretty you are.lollll
...yes and his name was Colin aka the epigramman ..... thank you for making my life here at the Hub precious and rewarding because you are in it - treating me with respect and dignity - and yes I look up to you - too!
Hi Minnetonka Twin, great hub, If you run into this friendly guy again maybe you may know for sure if he was flirting with you or not......time will tell !
Have a great weekend my friend !
CUTE--would make a nice movie scene!!
Fun and funny... Those kinds of little sparkly things can add a lift to the day, can't they? I do believe you did the right thing by being cautious though. A charmer of a story.
I was cool with everything until you said you had gone to the ladies room and when you came out he was there. That right there creeped me out.
I am all for dreaming too. I hope I did not burst your bubble
..well here I am back then to flirt with one of my favorite twins - and to thank you very much for your support and commentary - which keeps the epi-man and Colin very inspired! I just finished watching my favorite show on CBS (Saturday night) - 48 Hours Mystery - (my other favorite being '60 Minutes') and it's just after 11pm here by the northern shores of Lake Erie here in Canada .... keeping warm by the blowing heat with Mister Gabriel and Little Miss Tiffy listening to Bob Marley and the Wailers and having a glass or two of red wine .....Hope you are well too and keep thinking good thoughts!
This was such a fun and interesting read! This stuff makes for a feel-good movie until that guy had the nerve to direct you to where he was heading. That was a complete turn-off!So what if he was a hunk? I sure hope that the next time you see him, he will do the right thing and introduce himself, as what a proper gentleman should do.
Just the same, thank's for sharing your story.God bless.
Hi minnetonka Twin, understand that men cannot just do without flirting,is just part of their creations 4rm Baba God.
I got to follow twilight, best laugh Ive had in days...maybe weeks. Glad you didn't follow him, but a little flirt is no harm, if there's no husband on your arm.
Go back to the same gas station at the same time, same day of the week....you never know! That is, if you aren't involved with a man right now:) You just never know! I had a guy approach me at a gas station a few weeks ago...he had flirted with me at the grocery store a few months ago...he remembered me....I still wasn't interested, apparently...lol
Oh wow - he definitely should have introduced himself to you. Oh really what fun - love it!
I did really like your story, it was great.
It sounds to me like he was flirting alright !! You did the right thing not to follow him ...but it makes us girls feel good doesnt it ?
I enjoyed the read
LOl this was a kool story, good thing you didn't follow him, you can't trust anyone these days!
Love:)
Now this was really fun:-). I loved it - you just never know do you? It's the mystery that just may never end:-) thank you!
You will know when the right one comes along, when that person does everything right. God Bless You Precious Heart.
Well if it wasn't a forever mystery - all the fun would just go right out the window;-)!
Love can be found at the strangest places.Maybe just a guy who thought wow thats someone I want to get to know.I can't approach her or she will think I am too aggresive and freak her out.Remember he already seen you twice.Once at your car and then in the gas station. He was shy?Maybe you will meet again. He knew he saw someone beautiful when he saw you.Today you have to be careful and enjoy it for what it was a harmless sweet gesture of excitement and mystery and good vibes.Always trust your instincts. You were smart to go the other way.I wonder what would of happened if you noticed a guy you liked and thought he was cute.If you where him and he was you what would you do?Leave love at the gas station or wait to talk.I love the movie idea.YOu should go with it.I want the first tickets.Since I already had a preview.Great story.
It reminds me of a time when these guys kept honking at my friend and I at several red lights when we were cruising down town. I was 18 and found it kind of neat they were flirting with us. They motioned for me to roll my window down after about 3 or 4 stop lights and we did. They yelled these wonderful words at me.."Stupid girl turn your lights on"! Cute hub! You never know..
Sunnie
You are so very lucky to have a sister, something I never had. Then I married and had 3 boys. Although they are good sons, it 's not like having a daughter. I'm surprised to hear that you and your twin have the same academic interests. Isn't that unusual? Thank you for your story. Be very careful out there.
He probably was harmless. But I'm glad you went in the other direction. I think I would have too.
Thats a wonderful story. I believe that is a usual thing to feel by a woman and I could say based on my experience that there is something electrifying happening when meeting a particular kind of people. I have a related story too.:D
Flirting is quite innocent sometimes, love this hub
Oh the great unknow of a mystery man... That my dear is the stuff that romance novels are made of.
Enjoy the memory of it, the handsome confident smile of a stranger, the flush of excitement and the thrill of possible danger:)
Hi, what a great way to start the day! lol! I think he was probably harmless, in fact he probably delighted in making you squirm! haha! this reminded me of the day I went into my bank, went to the cash point on the wall and suddenly realised that the man, That man, the one my mum always wanted me to marry, was stood beside me, I smiled and he leaned down and said, 'we should take this money and elope, you know I always liked you' my face turned red, I mumbled something, goodness knows what and legged it out the door! haha! so much for age bringing wisdom and serenity! my friend actually had an experience similar to you, only she was holding a chicken! hee hee! seriously, she had just bought it, her jumper was covered in paint and she had no makeup! she never lived it down!
Well, I too enjoyed your flirting story :) Very funny. I don't trust men at gas stations though, lol. Thanks for sharing and voted up!
It started out as a flirt but the guy have to much ego to actually make a connection. Pointing is the direction he was heading hahahaha guess it has work for him before. Am glad that you took the opposite road :)

Interesting, flattering, but potentially deadly in this day and age. You did what you needed and should have done. good for you
