According to Wikipedia, fried wontons are served with a meat filling, (usually pork), and eaten with duck sauce, sweet and sour sauce, or hot mustard. A version of fried wontons are filled with a cream cheese and/or crab filling; these are called crab rangoon.

Recipe for Chinese-Cream Cheese Wontons

This is my delicious recipe for Fried-Chinese-Cream Cheese Wontons. I use my wok to fry the wontons into a delicious, golden brown appetizer. This is a family favorite that makes the perfect accompaniment with any stir fry dinner.

Ingredients for Cream Cheese Wontons

  • 1 Package Cream Cheese, Philadelphia
  • 1 Package Wonton Skins
  • 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
  • 3 Tablespoons Margarine or Butter, Melted
  • Soy Sauce, ToTaste at Table
  • Sweet and Sour Sauce, ToTaste at Table

Instructions for Fried Cream Cheese Wontons

  1. Heat 3 cups vegetable oil at medium heat in wok.
  2. For each wonton; Cut 1 teaspoon cream cheese and place in middle of wonton wrap.
  3. Put a dab of butter or margarine on one end of wonton wrap. (This helps hold wonton together).
  4. Fold square wonton into a triangle. (Keep piece of cream cheese in middle of wonton wrap).
  5. Add dab of butter or margarine on remaining three ends of wonton wrap.
  6. Fold bottom two sides inward to center of wonton wrap.
  7. Fold last remaining end down to the middle/bottom of wonton wrap.
  8. Pour vegetable oil in wok.
  9. Set burner to Medium setting until oil is hot and ready.
  10. Carefully place 4 or more wontons in wok with slotted spoon.
  11. Turn wontons with slotted spoon during cooking to prevent burning.
  12. Remove wontons from wok when brown and crispy with slotted spoon.
  13. Place wontons on plate, lined with paper towel. (This helps soak up excess oil).
  14. Let wontons cool before eating.
  15. Dip wontons into bowl of soy sauce and bowl of sweet and sour sauce at table.
